what makes the perfect hero?

Every story no matter what the genre requires a hero. But what makes the perfect hero? How do you invent someone with mass audience appeal?
I never actually plan my heroes. They tend to evolve as the story progresses and much to my surprise the character I had intended for the lead role often becomes a different character altogether.
Genre has a lot to do with characteristics.
Romantic leads are usually attractive, wealthy, debonair and slightly dangerous or troubled in some way.
Crime heroes are intelligent, secretive, daring.
My personal favourites are fantasy. They can be anything you can imagine as long as protect humanity.
My current hero is a studious demon who works as Lucifer’s personal secretary. He was originally only supposed to have a minor role but now it’s his job to save the world.
